Mega-charities like Oxfam and Mencap get most of the publicity about the sector but by far the greatest number of registered charities are very much smaller, with less than £1million turnover. Some of these are very local and others have a wider scope, but what most have in common is the struggle to get active trustees. Signalong, based at Waterside Court, has 4 speech therapists and a retired teacher trainer on its board, but needs new trustees with business experience to help to guide its work.
