Any ideas to alleviate traffic problems on the estate are worth investigating. I think it would be worth looking into this some more. It would have to launch near a large car park or the train station. Maybe a foot bridge connecting the estate with Rochester and Chatham would also be an idea? Think Millenium bridge for Medway (without the swaying problems!!)
I do like the "millenium bridge" idea. i think this is a long term solution which could link near Rochester train Station providing us pedestrian access to the railway and the new high speed link. This would take at least 2 years to procure and construct as well as all the planning permissions but certainly something that needs to be placed on the agenda for future development. In the meantime a quick fix would be water taxi with temporary walkways this could be procured within 6 - 12 months. I had a look at some aerial photos today and access to Rochester along the quayside is very possible. There are numerous areas of access from the estate where a launch could berth.
I wonder whether anyone has looked into this before and whether it proved unworkable? It would seem that now would be a good time to develop something like this, with the high speed link in place, and the forthcoming development on the riverside area over on the Rochester side (right opposite our office funnily enough!). The only thing I can think that would make this unworkable is if the council felt it would put too much pressure on the infrastructure in Rochester?
It will be very interesting to look into this some more. I'm not sure what the next step would be though?
If there was a river link from the estate to this development it would have a positive effect on all residents of the estate - surely. Houses, hotels with conference facilities, bars and restaurants etc. There is also talk of bridges on this information - does this mean a bridge over to the estate I wonder?
Hi Kate
You have raised some very good points. Although the council would always have a concern over infrastructure and the pressure it would be place on Rochester, they do believe by these waterfront propsals that Rochester can accomodate all this development. The long term answer would be a pedestrian access bridge but with this development now well in the pipe line no bridge can be built until most of the development is in place. Therefore to get these 2 areas of Rochester linked up in the short term i think a river taxi service should be in the offering.
The next steps in this and i am no big player would be to get the views of businesses and residents from both sides of the water together through petitions and discussions such as this one to get it to a stage of lobbying the council to a formal debate. Anything that gets people out of cars and on to public transpprt in the long term can only be a positive step for the Medway towns which is so well served by trains. But under utilised by what is one of the largest industrial trading estates in England!.
The only problem I can see with the river taxi is how do people get to their offices from where the taxi docks? There would have to be a bus system from there to various parts of the estate. Would get complicated!
well i would say if it is centralised the walk can not be more than 10 minutes in either direction the estate is no more than a mile long in any direction from its central point. a little walk is still quicker than queueing off the estate each night. and healthier too!
River Taxi plans - this report has been sent to me by our Medway Council representative. It outlines plans for regeneration around the Gun Wharf area of Chatham, but pages 21 and 34 show proposed plans for River Taxis - including a stop on Medway City Estate. Its great to see plans for regeneration in Chatham, especially when Medway CE may benefit from it!
Hi Kate
Sorry i have not been around lately, you have been busy! i have had a look at it and the future looks bright with this new generation, lets hope it takes off.!
There is public consultation taking place at the moment. If you like the plans then let us know, commonly people say when they are unhappy with it but not when they are happy with it.
Thank you for this information as a main contractor ourselves we are very interested in any future development schemes. I will certainly make a trip to the Chatham library and provide feedback on this issue.
